Those who follow aperturezone saw this coming: ever since the RJ45 guide, network articles have been piling up layer by layer. It was time to give them a home.
A Dedicated Section
The OSI model now has its own section: aperturezone.fr/osi. There, we break down the network layer by layer, from the cable all the way to the application—one article per layer, always tailored for those preparing for the TSSR or wanting to understand what’s really going on under IP.
The series is complete—all seven layers, in six articles:
- Layer 1 — RJ45, cabling, and connectors
- Layer 2 — MAC addresses, CAM table, ARP
- Layer 3 — IP, addressing, and routing
- Layer 4 — TCP, UDP, and ports
- Layers 5 & 6 — the phantom layers
- Layer 7 — the application layer: HTTP, DNS, DHCP
Seven layers, six articles: Layers 5 and 6, which are purely theoretical, are covered together.
The Articles Have Moved
The first three articles were previously located under /posts/. They are now organized in the /osi/ section, in the order of the layers.
Your old links still work: redirects are in place, so a bookmark to the old address will automatically take you to the correct article. You don’t need to do anything.
Why a section rather than scattered articles
Because the OSI model isn’t a collection of independent topics—it’s a stack, where each layer cleans up the mess left by the one below it. Reading them in order, all gathered in one place, lets you see the mechanics being built brick by brick. A section makes this progression clear; a list of articles buried in the feed does not.
